How to Overcome Your First Weightlifting “Roadblock”
Real Talk with Head Coach Caity
Embarking on my weightlifting journey, I vividly recall a pivotal moment—the first "real" time I got stuck. The challenge? Snatching 70kg. Little did I know, this would be a formidable obstacle that perplexed me for almost two years.
The Frustration:
In the pursuit of progress, my training routine included maxing out every "Big Friday." Consistently reaching 67kg, I'd psyche myself up, convincing that 70kg was within grasp. However, the breakthrough remained elusive. Despite the weight feeling deceptively light, my attempts were off balance, resulting in frustrating misses. In one instance, I clung to the bar, only to experience an epic bruise on my shin by brining the bar back down on me—an experience I'd rate 10/10 as a "do not recommend."
Doubts and Defeats:
During this protracted struggle, doubts about weightlifting being the right sport began to surface. The misalignment with my values of perseverance and effort left me feeling defeated. Despite consistently showing up to "do the work," tangible progress seemed out of reach. The persistent question arose: Was I making any real steps toward my goals? Was this sport right for me after all?
The Dark Place:
The struggle to decide between persisting and lowering my standards led me to a dark place. Being stuck constantly was disheartening, and I began to question if my training goals still resonated with my core values. The internal conflict became a poignant aspect of my journey as an athlete, and now as a coach.
Strategic Changes:
Amid this challenge, I manufactured a turning point and this strategic change became the key to breaking free. Shifting from a mindset of constant maxing out, I embraced a more nuanced approach. Lifting to a higher standard became paramount. Earning the right to go heavier involved meticulous planning, ensuring the lifts leading up to any 70kg attempt were executed flawlessly, if not, I had not ‘earned’ the right to go up. This shift included dropping the load back week in week out, refining my technique, and maintaining a high movement standard at 60-65kg—transforming these weights into my new routine numbers.
The Breakthrough:
The result was nothing short of a breakthrough. Finally snatching 70kg was a monumental achievement. Surpassing it with 72kg and 75kg in the same session marked a turning point. This success story continued with milestones of hitting 80kg and then 90kg over my weightlifting career.
A Shift in Perspective:
This challenging experience reshaped my perspective on training. It wasn't just about the physical aspect; it taught me that weightlifting genuinely takes time. More importantly, it underscored the significance of staying the course and consistently returning to my values. “Feeling stuck” is universal, regardless of skill level.
