Embrace Lifting Straps: When & How to Use them in Weightlifting

Welcome to the Melbourne West FAQ Education series! In this edition, we'll shed light on an often-misunderstood accessory in the weightlifting world: lifting straps. While some view straps as unnecessary or even detrimental, we'll show you why they can be a valuable tool to support your strength training journey. Let's explore the benefits, proper usage, and when it's appropriate to incorporate lifting straps into your workouts.

Why and When Should You Use Lifting Straps?

Lifting straps are particularly useful when your grip strength is likely to fail before the rest of your body during certain exercises. For instance, movements like deadlifts, pulls, and high-repetition hang snatches and cleans can put significant demands on your grip. By using lifting straps, you can continue to develop strength and improve technique in these movements without being limited by your grip strength.

Consider using lifting straps for heavy deadlifts and pulls, as well as during multi-rep hang snatches and cleans when your thumbs feel fatigued and unable to maintain a secure grip.

How to Use Lifting Straps

Lifting straps come in various shapes and materials, with synthetic and leather being the most common options. To use lifting straps effectively, follow these steps:

  1. Place the loop of the strap around your wrist.

  2. Wrap the strap under and around the barbell.

  3. Tighten the strap securely.

Do You Need to Use Lifting Straps?

Lifting straps should only be used when maintaining your grip on the bar becomes challenging or inhibits your performance. As a beginner, it's crucial to focus on building confidence and technical proficiency in your lifts first. In most cases, your lifts may not be heavy enough to require the use of lifting straps.

If you're unsure whether you should incorporate lifting straps into your training, don't hesitate to consult our knowledgeable coaches—Caity, Ari, or Seb. They will gladly assist you in making an informed decision based on your individual needs and goals.

Lifting straps are a valuable accessory that can enhance your strength training experience by alleviating grip limitations. By using lifting straps strategically, you can continue to push your limits, develop strength, and refine technique in exercises where grip strength tends to be a limiting factor. Remember, it's important to prioritize building a solid foundation of technique and confidence before considering the use of lifting straps.
