MWBC Standards: Upholding Excellence in Weightlifting

Welcome to our blog where we delve into the Melbourne West Standards that shape our exceptional weightlifting club. These principles have transformed our facility into the inspiring training space we proudly call home.

In our previous discussions, we covered essential topics such as supporting our team, seeking help when needed, respecting our space and equipment, and embracing the weightlifting process. Today, we'll explore two more crucial standards that epitomize our commitment to excellence: practicing safe technique over load and observing chalk etiquette.

Practice Safe Technique Over Load:

At Melbourne West, we prioritize your safety, health, and overall well-being. We firmly believe that no lift is worth compromising your physical integrity. Here are guidelines to ensure safe lifting practices:

  • If a lift becomes unmanageable, prioritize your well-being by dropping the barbell behind you and stepping forward, or dropping it in front of you and stepping backward.

  • If you experience dizziness or lightheadedness, release the barbell immediately.

  • Avoid ego-lifting. Trust your programmed weights and have confidence that your coach has designed a plan with your best interests in mind.

Our ultimate goal is to ensure your longevity in the sport while keeping safety as our top priority.

Practice Chalk Etiquette:

Chalk is provided at Melbourne West to enhance your grip and optimize your lifting performance. As members of MWBC, we expect everyone to adhere to the following chalk etiquette:

  • Use chalk sparingly within the designated areas.

  • Clean up any excess chalk using the handheld vacuum located in the designated cupboard.

  • Wipe down your barbell after use with the provided wet wipes located near the bathroom door.

We are fortunate to have a modern weightlifting space equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, and it is our collective responsibility to keep it clean, tidy, and free from excessive chalk spillage. If you notice a teammate forgetting to clean up, kindly remind them of this standard.

Turn Up for Your Team:

Weightlifting competitions require careful planning from athletes, coaches, and volunteers. At MWBC, we expect all lifters who compete to show their support by volunteering at competitions, ensuring their teammates have the opportunity to compete as well. By being present for your teammates during training and on competition day, you contribute to the unique camaraderie that sets MWBC apart.

Train Hard:

Training at Melbourne West provides the perfect opportunity to nurture your weightlifting practice, strengthen your skills, refine your technique, and deepen your understanding of the sport. While warming up allows for team camaraderie, once your hands are on the barbell, it's crucial to focus your attention. Stay fully engaged during training and pay close attention to the cues provided by your coach.

By consistently putting in the effort and embracing the guidance given, you can meet the minimum standard for success at Melbourne West Barbell Club. Remember, optimal rest periods of 60-120 seconds between sets are ideal for Olympic lifts, while exercises focused on strength development, such as squats, presses, and pulls, may require longer rest periods. If you have any uncertainties, don't hesitate to consult your coach for further guidance.

Let us all take pride in upholding these standards, knowing they form the bedrock of our thriving weightlifting community. Together, we can create an environment where growth, achievement, and camaraderie flourish.

Stay Strong,

The MWBC Coaching Team
